Lesson #186 – November 16th, 2020

Today was a backswing day at PKU and we did a little bit of refocusing on the posture. After time off I always get lazy with my hips and to not bend at the hips, I slouch. Patrick focused on this to start. We then worked on turning without using the arms.

When I go back, it feels like my left elbow stays inside the clubface as long as possible when I don’t use my arms. Basically, my left arm is soft and stays connected. We have worked so much on my right shoulder and right side being soft, but my left arm should remain soft as well. It is essential to start the backswing with a very soft left arm and left elbow. As my body turns, my left elbow should turn inside as we go back. When I do this, I can feel the torque building.

Patrick took it a little bit deeper today. When I get to what I think is the top, he rests the top of my head on his chest and makes my shoulders turn even more. This is the stage where the arms are going to separate from the body, but it is not something I need to think about. The most important thing for me to think about is the posture at setup and getting the swing started with the left elbow being soft and the right shoulder staying low.

While my chipping motion was getting better and better over the last few weeks, I allowed the right shoulder to creep back into this motion. When I do it the best, my right (back) shoulder stays low and I use my core to drive through the ball and continue. I need to refocus on the right shoulder staying low on this drill. I still feel my right side being sucked in which is good.
