Lesson #188 – November 23rd, 2020

After being off for a few days Patick noticed my shoulders “rounding forward” at the setup and on the take away. I think part of this was due to the fact that I was focused too much on the tension on the inside of my triceps. That was causing me to be rolled forward. After relaxing my arms Patrick would make sure I stayed wide with my hips and my shoulders during the take away.

My left hip was getting narrow instead of staying wide. Basically, I need to hold of with my left hip while turning my upper body. I also need to make sure my right knee remains firm and stable throughout the entire backswing. My legs have been collapsing as Patrick turns me.

We also focused on depth today. Patrick wants my left lat to drive under and towards my right knee at the top of the backswing. The more my lat can drive under, it takes the left shoulder out of the swing. Obviously, I need to take out the shoulders as much as possible.

It is so hard to start to hit the ball better and then take a step backwards with my striking because I have more depth. As usual, I started to hit behind the ball. Patrick said this is fine because my timing is off when I create more depth with the shoulder turn in the back swing.

With Patrick turning me and kneading muscles in my side and shoulders I simply held off with my left hip and kept my right knee stable. This is something I am not going to be able to practice on my own as Patrick physically has to use strength to continue to turn me. It is amazing how lacking I am when it comes to flexibility.

I hit a few decent shots but hit some really bad ones too. Patrick wants me to make certain I get great depth and I should not worry about the outcome of the shot. Once again, this is extremely hard as we are 188 lessons in and I still haven’t worked on where the ball is actually going when I hit it. Does anyone else really go through this?

I will get over it, it’s just a challenge when everyone else is out playing golf and oftentimes playing well and I haven’t hit anything longer than a 9 iron in well over a year. Ahhh, the joys of learning the golf swing.
