Lesson #189 – November 24th, 2020

Another backswing day at PKU and Patrick continues to work on more depth. As usual, the more depth I get, the further I hit behind the ball. It is extremely frustrating. Patrick is really working on making my lower right obliques soft by kneading them on the way back. To get to complete depth, we need the lower right side to be soft to finish the turn.

I hit the ball ok during my lesson and Patrick wanted me to play 18 holes. I ended up having to play with a guy around my age and his 4 year old son. Needless to say, it wasn’t exactly a practice round. I got 9 holes in and on the 7th hole started to understand that I was giving up and lifting right at impact.

During my lesson, Patrick showed me that right after impact I need to stay low with my upper body and drive under and through with my right lat. When I do this, my right leg comes all the way through in a step through motion. This is what Gary Player used to do. If I give up and lift, I do not feel the step through motion at all.

When I did stay low and drive through impact I hit the ball so much further and it was drawing. With my fall back motion I get no distance and the ball flutters and often fades. When I stay low and get through the ball keeping my upper body low I really hit the ball much, much harder. I only played three holes with this understanding so we will see if I can actually do it with Patrick during a lesson.

It was nice to see that on the course I was able to drive under and through at impact and actually make good contact. In the past, when I tried to do something on the course, I would end up hitting terrible shots. One more lesson before Thanksgiving break.
