Lesson #199 – December 11th, 2020

Today was a Friday which means a blend day for the backswing and the downswing. Patrick started the lesson by twisting me up a few times on the backswing. My upper right lat was active which caused me to lift with my arms at the top of the backswing. We also touched on the importance of there being no space between my hands with my grip as I get to the top of my backswing. When I keep my hands together it actually takes them out of the swing a little bit more. It is a weird feel but something I will have to get used to.

Patrick had me turn quite a bit and worked on softening my upper right lat. At the top of the backswing he will gently nudge my shoulders into place. This is something I cannot do myself so he simply puts me in the correct position.

Near the end of the lesson Patrick touched on why I often hit the toe of the club on the ground right before the ball. After I get to the top of the backswing I need to re-establish my left knee then drive my left obliques towards second base or about 15 degrees right of the target. I try to get right on the target line as quickly as possible. If I can re-establish the left knee, drive the right obliques towards second base I then have room for my chest to turn and lead my arms. When I don’t drive towards second base I get stuck and I want to escape with my arms.

I feel as if I can get my right lat to soften and can drive towards second base ever so slightly on the downswing I am going to be in a good position to hit the ball well. I also noticed that it is getting easier and easier for me to lead with my chest through the ball. A week ago I could not do this at all.
