Lesson #201 – December 17th, 2020

Today was a downswing day at PKU but, as always, we started with the backswing. With the softening of my upper right lat and the tightening of my grip throughout the backswing, I am getting much more depth. With each lesson, I am feeling the body creating the circle of the golf swing.

On the downswing, I need to re-establish my left knee and leg, close the gap with my lower right side and then rotate with my upper right side. I like to close the gap and then hang back instead of rotating. This is why I hit behind the ball and hit the ball very high at the moment. It is a challenge for me to get my upper body to cover the ball.

After I rotate with the upper right side Patrick pushes on my lower right side and upper right side while I hold the club face well behind my body. As I rotate my chest through my left elbow falls downwards and my right side drives my chest through. From there, Patrick grabs the club and holds it out in front of my chest as I continue to turn. This is extremely difficult for me right now.

After impact, I want to give up and just throw the club. Patrick wants me to keep the lag and drive all the way to the top of the follow through with my chest. I shouldn’t lift with my arms or shoulders.

Now that we are creating a better backswing and I am getting closer to the ball with my downswing I am getting some confidence when it comes to hitting the ball well. In the past, I would hit a few well then hit some really bad and lose all confidence. Now, I am hitting about 75% of my shots well and if I do hit one heavy I know I need more depth in the backswing and patient on the downswing to get my upper body through the impact zone. Easy enough.
