Lesson #206 – December 29th, 2020

Today was a focused backswing day at PKU. Patrick continues to reiterate the importance of allowing the upper right side to be soft. He will knead and push on the inside of my upper right lat and I can feel the knots and tension. The goal over the next two or three weeks is to really foam roll out this tension. I have started to foam roll my lats two times a day and will likely increase that over time.

Patrick was so impressed with my backswing that he actually took out his iPad and took a picture. When Patrick brings out the iPad to take a picture or video, you know you are doing something correct. Today we took depth even further on the backswing. When I can soften my upper right lat I can really get the finish of the backswing which feels like the club is coming around and going towards second base.

It is also cool to feel the left hand hinging naturally as the body turns the club and the arms. It is something I can feel every so often with Patrick’s help but it is great to get the feel. I know we still aren’t worried about the hands other than making certain the grip does not allow space in between the hands.

I did hit some silly little shank chips with the practice chipping motion but that was because I was thinking about something else and playing with trying to open my left shoulder before taking the club away. The left core is naturally going to open the left shoulder and that in turn will allow the chest rotation to get the club back to the ball. I know when I don’t think about the chipping motion it will be back to being great as it has been for the last week or two.

The focus this week is getting the hip bend better by allowing my butt to go back slightly as I allow the club to fall behind the ball and to work on the tension in my lats with foam rolling. Ahhh, the fun times of developing a great golf swing.
