Lesson #215 – January 18th, 2021

In a twist, Patrick wanted to do a downswing day on a Monday at PKU. This is very rare. After working on my hips staying bent over and me keeping my spine angle on the backswing, Patrick started to work my left shin and left knee in the downswing. It is going to take a lot of patience and practice to keep my spine angle with my left hip on the backswing. I do a good job of keeping my upper right lat soft now but I still want to stand up with my hips rather than staying bent over.

When I stay bent over it feels like I cannot turn my upper body at all. It feels like such a small turn and to get it to feel deeper I give up this angle and stand up a little bit. Instead, I need to keep the left hip down and it will end up being pointed just right of the target at the top of my backswing. My left hip loves to give way in an attempt to increase what feels like depth.

Patrick is going to have to work hard to keep my spine angle while turning my upper body around my lower body. On the downswing, Patrick is really working my right side getting through impact and then being soft or putty. With the practice chipping motion, I am getting much better at allowing my right side to get through impact without tension which in turn allows me to really feel like I can throw my upper body to the right of the target.

Every time I start to hit the ball well Patrick adds a few layers to tighten things up. In any other circumstance I would be frustrated but now I am hitting the ball better with each addition and I am not playing golf because of COVID anyway.

Today was also the day Patrick brought Girl Scout Cookies. I am sure I will pound through those and buy more very soon.
