Lesson #233 – February 26th, 2021

It was a cold Friday afternoon and there was no one out at Knight’s Play. We worked solely on the backswing today. Now we are focusing on the crease on the right side and the upper body turning around. Patrick still has me hold alignment sticks across my chest with my left hand and hold the crease with my right hand. He also mentioned I need to refocus the angle of my hips at setup. About once every three months I start to get lazy with this. I am also still working on feeling going down with my left side at the take away.

If I can hold the crease and keep my right knee inside throughout the backswing I can really feel my entire upper body turning. I can even feel the stretch on the back of the lower right side. Patrick wants me to keep that “pull in” feel on the lower right side even to the top of the backswing. At the top, instead of continuing to pull in with the lower right side, I get fat, lift my arms and want to stand up. This is the finishing touch that will make my backswing very good.

I hit some balls great as I have for many of my last few lessons. I do feel myself getting a little bit quick on the transition as I am getting more depth. That extra half inch is a lot when it comes to timing with the golf swing.

My practice chipping motion is getting really good with the right heel being in front of the right toe and my right shoulder being behind my right hip. It has taken me about 100 practice swings doing this but now I am beginning to feel the right shoulder being low and what feels like hitting “up” on the ball. I know I am not hitting up but this is the feel now that my right shoulder is low and my right obliques are already through the ball.

I ended up playing 18 holes. I birdied the first hole on each nine but ended up having a few bogeys for silly reasons. When I try to hit shots over 135 yards I definitely struggle as I am fading the ball and sometimes even slicing it. I am hitting the ball hard but it is definitely coming over the top before impact. Patrick can clean this up next week.
