Lesson #238 – March 5th, 2021

Lesson #5 this week. This is a rare week where we got all five lessons in at PKU. Today was a backswing and downswing day. After doing my homework I realized something with the crease. We use the crease on the right side on the backswing to resist and then we use the crease on the left side during the downswing. We suck in with the lower right side on the backswing and we suck in with the lower left side on the downswing and follow through. This is why Dustin Johnson looks so bent over after impact. He does the best job of sucking in on the downswing and follow through.

Years ago Patrick told me the swing will feel like a punch shot. When you suck in with the left side and keep the crease, it is going to feel exactly like a punch shot. So, now I am working on the right crease on the backswing and the left crease on the downswing. There is a lot of core work that needs to be completed but I definitely understand now.

I also understand the importance of the left side sucking in on the downswing with the practice chipping motion. I always got fat with my left side which caused me to pull and the club did not hit ball first. It would either hit the ground or I would blade it. Now it feels like my upper body is covering the ball. I need to make sure to suck in my left side when setting up with the practice chipping motion.

My homework over the weekend is to keep working on getting to the top of the backswing with the right crease and sucking in the right side. I will feel my left lat coming up and turning my back around my core. From there, I am to keep my left shoulder low and drive under with the right side while keeping the left crease and sucking in on the left side. My finish will feel very short and like a punch shot but this is what we want.
