Lesson #249 – March 26th, 2021

After the drive back from Chimney Rock it was a Friday lesson at PKU. We are working on keeping the crease on the right side, maintaining posture at setup and throughout the swing and making certain the upper left lat does the work at the top of the swing. Patrick added that my upper left lat needs to stay broad and long. I like to pinch it in and keep the shoulder angle steep. Instead, Patrick grabs under my armpit on my left side and pulls it up to keep it long. This feels very weird right now but this is what flattens the shoulder plane.

When I do this it also feels like my arms are going straight back at the top of the backswing. I am keeping the triangle but it is moving away from my body and giving me a ton of space underneath my right elbow and armpit to transition into the downswing.

I need to make certain I keep the right crease as when I drive with my left lat I often give up the right crease. I also need to be cognizant not to let my head fall a foot towards the target at take away. My main focus right now is the head moving to the right (slightly), my right crease and the upper right lat driving into the second half of the backswing. If I can do this and really suck in with my stomach and especially my right side, I hit the ball really well.

It also helps me keep my arms out of the the as the left elbow is feeling softer and inside more and more as the body creates the backswing. We have come quite a long way but the backswing is almost where it needs to be. Now, I need to work on my left shoulder not popping up to try to generate power. When I have a great golf swing, my left shoulder will stay at the same level it is when I get to the top of the backswing. Right now, I want to lift it to gain power.

Ahhh, almost at 250 lessons and every lesson is still brings many new aspects of the golf swing to learn.
