Lesson #257 – April 12th, 2021

Today was a backswing day at PKU and the first time hitting my clubs with my new grips. Patrick and Renny were both joking with me about how poorly the grips were put on. They have a wave pattern and there are air bubbles in them. Oh well, they are still much better than the old grips I had that were worn out.

Patrick continued to work on my backswing with the alignment stick across my chest and holding my crease with my right hand. He continues to pull back on my shoulders when I get to the top of the backswing. This is not something I am going to try to do myself as I will do it wrong. I will let Patrick clean that up.

I ended up hitting some very poor chips so Patrick addressed my setup. He wants me to have more space under my right arm. To do this, we need better posture and I need to feel as if my right lat comes under my right shoulder and I am pointing towards right field. This opens up my trail (right) lat. I can then feel like I am coming around my body and into the ball with the shaft of the club staying long.

When I also do this with my full swing I can feel it coming out of the right barrel better. We hooked up the Mevo and here are the readings:

Pitching Wedge – 152 yards
8 iron – 171 yards
7 iron – 182 yards

I still have work to do with my upper right lat being soft and pointing to right field at the set up. I know that when I get more comfortable it won’t feel as extreme, but I need to do it on my chipping motion for sure. I get in the habit of allowing that right shoulder to take over and come over the top. It needs to relax and stay back while I drive under and through.
