Lesson #263 – April 27th, 2021

After a bad day yesterday, today was much better. Patrick continues to talk about the right side being a brace rather than being lazy. While I have taken out much of my right side lifting or pulling I still allow my right hip to slightly lift or give way instead of resisting. What I need to do is really feel my left side driving into the right hip with the right hip bracing and being silent. When I did this a few times it was shocking how loud my right hip was in the past. It loved to move around and dance when the backswing started.

When done correctly, it feels like my right hip does nothing and then resists once the left side starts to drive the upper body. The golf swing is the upper body turning around the lower body. If the right hip does not brace and remain super passive for me my upper body cannot turn around my lower body.

When I can keep the right hip passive and bracing and my upper body turns I have to remain super patient. I still want to go fast and that gets things out of sequence. When I go somewhat slow and allow my body to turn around my right hip I can get a super deep turn and my arms are just along for the ride. This is when I see the club face being very big or wide through impact. When I get short I end up throwing the toe into the ground. It is still much better but my best contact is keeping the right hip silent, bracing with it and getting a big turn with my left side driving through.

This also flattens out my shoulder plane at the top. Once again, when the right hip gives way and starts to lift, my shoulder plane does not flatten at the top of the swing, it stays too steep and that causes my right side to get fat.

I feel as if a lot of puzzle pieces are in place, I simply need to put them together and I will have a pretty good swing. Let’s hope so.
