Lesson #302 – July 23rd, 2021

Patrick really wants me to play nine holes with Reny Buddin but I really don’t feel as if I am ready. While my backswing has gotten much better with the pushing down on the knuckles of the left hand into the fingers of the right hand, I still feel very little confidence when Patrick is not around. I am working on leaving my arms behind me and starting the downswing with my lower right side, but I can feel my arms want to outrun my body.

It is so very hard to let the body lead on the downswing. I feel as if I do a pretty good job on the backswing but then on the downswing I just rip my arms straight to the ball without my body moving. Patrick said this is a sequencing issue and something every golfer deals with. What every golfer does not deal with is shanking the ball or having almost no confidence in their downswing.

I did hit some pretty good half and three quarters shots with my arms staying back and my body getting ahead. I decided to test myself at UNC Finley to see if I can really play with Reny next week. Yep. No way. I did very well with the chipping drill but on my half and three quarter swings about three out of every five were straight shanks. It got into my head so bad that once I got to the top of the backswing I had zero confidence. I am not going out on a golf course with zero confidence. This is a waste of time.

I really don’t know when I will be able to hit balls by myself without shanking it or hitting them terribly but it definitely is not going to be in the next week. I am doing the best I can and that is all I can ask myself. If it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen.
